The Black Hills National Forest has endless recreational opportunities and winter time is no exception. Snow fall is often measured in feet, so don’t forget your warm clothes.
Black Hills Snowmobiling
From December 15th to March 31st the Black Hills snowmobile trails offer amazing riding opportunities. With 350 miles of groomed trails and access to off-trail riding on 1.2 million acres of the Black Hills National Forest. The Dumont Trailhead is close to Deadwood and is a popular access point for the trails.
Snowshoeing is definitely gaining popularity in the Black Hills. It is an outdoor activity that can be enjoyed anywhere there is snow cover. Some great trails near Deadwood are: Eagle Cliff Trails, Englewood Trailhead and Iron Creek in Spearfish Canyon.

There are many cross-country skiing trails in the Black Hills. Eagle Cliff Trails are located about 20 minutes from Deadwood. Consider picking up a copy of Exploring the Black Hills and Badlands: A Guide for Hikers, Cross-Country Skiers, & Mountain Bikers it is a fantastic reference with great maps and excellent directions and descriptions.
