Tatanka

Just outside Deadwood is Tatanka: Story of the Bison

As you approach Deadwood there is an attraction that pays tribute to the beasts that once wandered the great plains.  Tatanka: Story of the Bison is Kevin Costner’s  way of celebrating the American Bison.

This is a really neat display.  There are 14 bison and 3 Native American Statues perched on the hilltop depicting a buffalo jump.  The scale in larger than life, very impressive.  In addition, there is an Interpretive center, gift shop and snack bar.

You will find Tatanka open May 15th through September 30th 9AM to 5PM.  Season passes are available if you wish to visit multiple times.  Children 5 and under are free.

It is located on Highway 85, just one mile North of Deadwood.  It is right across the road from the Lodge at Deadwood.  Visit my Deadwood Map to see the location.

If you want to spend a bit more time outside you are just a short distance from both the Preacher Smith Monument and Friendship Tower on Mount
